Great Britain’s Paralympic Games opponents confirmed for Tokyo 2020 Preliminary Stage

Great Britain’s opponents for the Preliminary Stage of this summer’s Paralympic Games in Tokyo have been confirmed with just over 100 days to go until the GB Men and Women begin their Paralympic campaigns.

The draw, hosted at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, saw the twelve men’s teams and ten women’s teams drawn into two groups for Tokyo 2020’s round-robin Preliminary Stage.

The Men’s competition features two groups of six and Great Britain were drawn in Group B where they will face defending champions USA, 2018 World bronze medallists Australia, 2019 European semi-finalists Germany, African champions Algeria and 2018 World semi-finalists Iran.

There are five teams in each of the two groups in the Women’s competition and the GB Women will play 2019 Parapan American champions Canada, Asia-Oceania runners-up Australia, 2018 World bronze medallists Germany and Paralympic hosts Japan in Group A.

The top four in each group will advance through to the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and final.

Great Britain’s Men’s and Women’s teams qualified for the Paralympic Games following their performances at the 2019 IWBF European Championships, where the GB Men were crowned European champions and the GB Women secured an historic silver medal, their highest ever European finish.

The Tokyo 2020 draw was presented by broadcaster and British Olympian Jeannette Kwakye with Charlie Bethel, Chair of IWBF’s Competition Commission, conducting the draw along with five-time Paralympian Sir Philip Craven MBE and the Japanese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, HAYASHI Hajime.

Simon Brown and Ian Sagar help RSV Lahn-Dill secure Champions Cup victory as GB internationals feature throughout

Simon Brown and Ian Sagar were both part of the victorious RSV Lahn-Dill side that were crowned Champions Cup winners’ during a weekend which saw 14 GB internationals and the best teams in Europe go head-to-head.

The new tournament for this season, featuring clubs from Germany, Italy and Spain, saw Lahn-Dill come out on top with Brown and Sagar both helping their side to victory against Helen Freeman’s RSB Thuringia Bulls in the all-German final.

1st RSV Lahn-Dil (Simon Brown; Ian Sagar)

Simon Brown featured in each of Lahn-Dill’s three games, scoring four points in the final which ended with Brown and Ian Sagar lifting the trophy after Lahn-Dill secured a 71:67 victory in Sunday’s final versus RSB Thuringia Bulls.

Fourteen of Sagar’s 16 points across the weekend came in Friday’s quarter-final win over BSR ACE Gran Canaria. Things could have been very different had Sagar not shown the great composure he did when sinking two free throws in the final seconds of their opening game.

With 8.6 seconds to go, Sagar lined-up behind the free-throw with the scores level at 59:59. Composed and with pinpoint accuracy, Sagar made no mistake, his two successful free throws proved decisive, with 61:59 the final result.

2nd – RSB Thuringia Bulls (Helen Freeman)

Helen Freeman helped RSB Thuringia Bulls claim second-place, coming off the bench in both their quarter-final victory over Baskets 96 Rahden and the final against RSV Lahn-Dill.

In the quarter-final, Freeman entered the action in the concluding minutes of the final quarter, helping to ensure Thuringia Bulls held onto their advantage to secure a 77:66 opening win.

During the time Freeman was on court in the final, Thuringia Bulls did close the points gap on Lahn-Dill, but Lahn-Dill went on to claim the tournament victory in what was a close final game. The two teams will meet again this weekend at the start of the best-of-three RBBL1 Championship Final.

3rd – CD Ilunion (Terry Bywater; Gregg Warburton)

Terry Bywater and Gregg Warburton both helped CD Ilunion clinch third-place as they battled to a 71:95 victory against current Division de Honor leaders Bidaideak Bilbao BSR.

Warburton scored 41 points across the weekend, including 23 points in the third-place play-off along with a game-high assists total of seven. His 23 points haul against Bilbao followed totals of eight and 10 points in the first two games against GSD Porto Torres and RSV Lahn-Dill, respectively.

Bywater scored six points in each of the two opening games, amassing seven assists and eight rebounds across the weekend.

5th – BSR Amiab Albacete (Harry Brown; Gaz Choudhry; Ben Fox; Lee Manning; Kyle Marsh)

All five of the GB internationals representing BSR Amiab Albacete played in each of the three games as Albacete ended the weekend with a 62:54 win over BSR ACE Gran Canaria to finish fifth.

Gaz Choudhry was in the top-three for both total points scored and total assists, scoring the second highest number of points with 70. 30 of his 70 points came in Albacete’s 77:79 quarter-final overtime defeat to Bidaideak Bilbao BSR on Friday.

Choudhry scored five points in the final 60 seconds of regular time to send the game into overtime and, despite scoring an additional five points in the extra period, it sadly wasn’t enough for Albacete to avoid defeat in their opening game.

It was a match that saw Kyle Marsh top the assists standings with 13 as Marsh and Choudhry both ended the weekend with a total of 29 assists, putting them joint-third in the Champions Cup assists standings. Marsh scored 18 points across the weekend.

Choudhry followed his game-leading 30 points total from the first game with two 20 points hauls against Baskets 96 Rahden and then BSR ACE Gran Canaria in the battle for fifth place.

Lee Manning led the scoring in the game against Gran Canaria with a game-high 22 points as he finished the weekend with 57 points after recording 17 and 18 points in the opening two games. Manning was third in the standings for total rebounds, collecting a total of 33 rebounds, including game-leading figures against both Rahden and Gran Canaria.

Ben Fox and Harry Brown both featured off the bench in each of the games for Albacete, with Fox totalling 12 points.

6th – BSR ACE Gran Canaria (James MacSorley)

James MacSorley recorded two points, two rebounds and one assist in BSR ACE Gran Canaria’s opening defeat to eventual winners RSV Lahn-Dill. MacSorley followed that up with four points and four rebounds in Saturday’s placement game win against GSD Porto Torres.

7th – Baskets 96 Rahden (Peter Cusack; Jake Robinson; Thomas Smith)

Jake Robinson was the highest scoring British player for Baskets 96 Rahden, scoring 24 points, as Rahden finished seventh after victory over GSD Porto Torres in the final placement game. Robinson scored 12 points against RSB Thuringia Bulls, 10 against BSR Amiab Albacete and two against GSD Porto Torres.

There was also a double-digit points total for Peter Cusack against Thuringia Bulls as he scored 10 points in the opening game, before points hauls of four and eight points, respectively, saw Cusack end the weekend with a tally of 22 points.

Thomas Smith’s highest total came in the final game against Porto Torres, when he added 12 points to the four he scored against Thuringia Bulls.

British Wheelchair Basketball confirms decision not to enter a GB team into the IWBF 2021 U22 European Championships

British Wheelchair Basketball this week confirmed its decision not to enter a GB team into the IWBF 2021 U22 European Championships.

Citing the reasoning behind the difficult decision, the Sport acknowledged that COVID-19 continued to present too great of a risk to the well-being of the squad, and wider support team. Added to this the uncertainty regarding international travel restrictions and quarantines, plus limited opportunity to adequately prepare a team for competition (given the significant training break during the pandemic) – the NGB felt it had no choice but to take the difficult decision not to enter a GB team into the Championship.

The implications of the Sports decision are far reaching, as the 2021 U22 Europeans is also the qualifying tournament for the 2022 IWBF U23 World Championships. This will now mean that the GB national junior squad will no longer have the opportunity to defend its IWBF U23 2017 World Championship Title at the 2022 World Championships.

In what will understandably be a disheartening decision for the athletes and staff impacted, BWB’s Performance Director Jayne Ellis explained:

“We simply felt that there was no other decision that could be made, given the timing of the Championships. Throughout the pandemic we have operated with an athlete first approach to the delivery of the World-Class Programme by ensuring health and well-being are prioritised above training and competition.

“This situation is no different; had the Championships been held later in the year, when the UK and Europe was in a better place with the management of the COVID-19 pandemic we could have had the opportunity to make a different decision, but with just seven weeks’ notice after a year of limited training opportunities for our players, alongside the risks still posed by COVID-19, we have been left with no choice but to make this decision.

“As a Performance Director one of my priorities is to ensure the GB squads have the opportunity to compete at the highest international level, but this isn’t at the cost of athlete or staff health and the priority right now has to be the wellbeing of our all our players and staff. We are focused on the future, post pandemic, when our teams will be once again, ready to dominate on the world stage of wheelchair basketball.”

Helen Freeman, Simon Brown and Ian Sagar help clubs reach play-off final in Germany

Helen Freeman, Simon Brown and Ian Sagar helped their clubs reach the Championship final in Germany, while Martin Edwards top-scored twice in two days as he ended his season in Italy.

George Bates was the weekend’s leading points scorer in Spain and seven GB internationals were involved in a highly-competitive one-point game between CD Ilunion and BSR Amiab Albacete.

Germany

It’s been two weekends of intense action in Germany with both of the best-of-three play-off semi-finals featuring GB internationals, including on both sides of the court in the semi-final which saw RSB Thuringia Bulls and Baskets 96 Rahden go head-to-head.

Helen Freeman and RSB Thuringia Bulls took to the court on Saturday with the advantage after their victory over Rahden in the first game a week before, and they secured their place in the Championship final thanks to an 82:61 win in the second game.

Freeman, who has featured throughout the season for Thuringia Bulls, scored two points to help her side to victory, while Thomas Smith and Peter Cusack scored 10 and eight points, respectively, for Rahden as their play-off final hopes were sadly ended.

There was semi-final joy for Simon Brown and Ian Sagar as they helped RSV Lahn-Dill to a second victory over Hannover United, setting-up what promises to be another enthralling final as Lahn-Dill and Thuringia Bulls renew their rivalry, featuring Freeman, Brown and Sagar.

Sagar scored six points in Lahn-Dill’s 69:47 win over Hannover on Saturday, while Brown scored two points in the game which secured Lahn-Dill’s place in another Championship final. The first match of the best-of-three final will take place on 8 May with both finalists now turning their attentions to the Champions Cup (30 April-2 May).

Italy

In Italy, Martin Edwards ended his 2021 club campaign with two game-leading points totals as his Special Bergamo Sport Montello finished seventh in this season’s condensed format of Italy’s Serie A.

Edwards posted a game-high 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in the first game in the battle for seventh between Bergamo and Reggio Calabria Bic Farmacia Pellicano. It was another top-score for Edwards a day later, adding 27 points, 19 rebounds and six assists in the second game as Bergamo beat Reggio Calabria 69:57 and 62:52 to finish seventh.

Spain

The GB athletes playing for clubs in Spain still have at least three games left in the Division de Honor season, and, with no play-offs in Spain this year, the battle for top spot looks to be going down to the wire.

There remains British interest at the top with BSR Amiab Albacete, Mideba Extremadura and BSR ACE Gran Canaria all featuring GB internationals, and all three clubs are level on 33 points, three points behind league leaders Bidaideak Bilbao BSR.

Albacete’s title hopes were dealt a blow in what was a thrilling game between CD Ilunion and Albacete on Saturday.

Seven GB internationals were in action in Madrid with Ilunion, featuring Terry Bywater and Gregg Warburton, claiming a 70:69 victory. Warburton recorded 11 points and a game-high eight assists while Bywater scored two points as Ilunion claimed their fourth consecutive win.

Gaz Choudhry was the game’s joint-leading points scorer with 25 points, including three maximums, as GB athletes scored 61 of Albacete’s 69 points. Lee Manning added 14 points to Albacete’s total along with a game-high 15 rebounds.

Kyle Marsh posted 12 points and five assists, Harry Brown‘s tally of seven points included a three-pointer and Ben Fox ended the game with three points.

George Bates ended the weekend as the weekend’s top points scorer in Division de Honor, scoring 28 points in Mideba Extremadura’s 59:80 win at Fundacion Vital Zuzenak, along with a team-high rebounds total of 11.

Billy Bridge topped the game’s assists standings with 10, also scoring 10 points and collecting five rebounds. Mideba are now level on points with Albacete and Gran Canaria, although Mideba have played a game less.

James MacSorley scored eight points for Gran Canaria in their 50:76 defeat against league leaders Bidaideak Bilbao BSR.

Lee Fryer led the points scoring in Servigest Burgos’ 97:20 win versus Getafe BSR, scoring a game-high 20 points, along with seven assists and six rebounds. Will Bonner scored six points as Burgos secured their third successive win.

There was also victory for Lewis Edwards and Sam Mack as Iberconsa Amfiv beat Fundacion FDI Las Rozas, 56:39, with Edwards scoring 12 points.

Abdi Jama totalled 10 points for Amviel but they weren’t able to avoid a 45:53 defeat against Fundacion Aliados. Jama will be back in action on Saturday as Amivel host CD Ilunion in the only Division de Honor fixture of the weekend.

British Wheelchair Basketball announce launch of first-ever Women’s Premier League

British Wheelchair Basketball has today announced the creation of the inaugural Women’s Premier League. The British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Premier League will be the first of its kind for women’s wheelchair basketball in the world, and the very first professional para-sport league in the UK.

The introduction of the league is a game-changing moment for the sport and will attract the world’s best wheelchair basketball players, signposting the UK as a destination for high level, quality competition for aspiring female talent. The first season will run from December 2021 to May 2022.

The creation of the Women’s Premier League is integral to British Wheelchair Basketball’s 12-year strategy, which set out bold targets of delivering a Professional Domestic League, developing a world- class high-performance system and doubling participation in the sport.

To meet this ambition, British Wheelchair Basketball are also today announcing four High-Performance Partnerships, operating at university sites across the UK. The universities will each be home to a Women’s Premier League team, with franchises based at:

  • Cardiff Metropolitan University
  • Loughborough University
  • University of East London
  • University of Worcester

The High-Performance Partnerships will be centres of excellence for wheelchair basketball in the UK for both men and women. These Partnerships will develop and nurture wheelchair basketball talent, acting as hubs to incubate and develop future elite athletes and increase access to the Paralympic talent pathways across the UK.

Lisa Pearce, British Wheelchair Basketball’s Chief Executive, said:

“I am absolutely delighted to be announcing the creation of British Wheelchair Basketball’s Women’s Premier League and our new High-Performance Partnerships. The league will provide incredible opportunities for elite female talent, both in the UK and internationally and we expect the teams to attract the best players in the world.

“We have selected four fantastic universities to become the first British Wheelchair Basketball High-Performance Partnerships and these hubs will be absolutely central to the sport as we work to deliver our World Class Performance Programme strategy. They will nurture talent and facilitate the opportunity for world-class athletes to adopt a dual career approach.

“Today is an important moment in achieving our big ambitions for the sport and working with the universities is central to raising the profile of the sport, building new audiences and creating more opportunities for people to play across all levels.”

Great Britain’s Wheelchair Basketball player, Amy Conroy, added:

“The introduction of the Women’s Premier League is massive for the sport and for us as players. Historically there has been a bit of a gap in elite level competition for female players so I’m absolutely thrilled that British Wheelchair Basketball are ensuring we have equal opportunity to develop and flourish.

“The sport is fast-paced and high-octane, and I can’t wait for more people to be able to watch us in action. I hope that it will also challenge misconceptions about disability sport and inspire more people to try wheelchair basketball for themselves.”

The High-Performance Partnerships are now recruiting elite players for their Women’s Premier League teams and their university BUCS teams.

Discussing their selection as one of British Wheelchair Basketball’s High-Performance Partnerships, Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Director of Sport, Ben O’Connell said:

“Following a rigorous application and interview process, we are delighted to be awarded one of the four inaugural High-Performance Partnerships for British Wheelchair Basketball (BWB).

“This recognition identifies our University as a centre of excellence for disabled athletes and builds on our already well-established partnership with Disability Sport Wales. It is also testament to the quality of our existing holistic basketball programme that sees Men, Women & Wheelchair athletes competing at the highest levels in both National & Student leagues. Working in partnership with BWB, we aim to attract a greater number of students and elite level athletes to Cardiff Met, and support the performance aspirations of the National Governing Body on the global stage.

“The addition of the HPP is a further demonstration of the University’s commitment to inclusion and diversity and we are excited to increase participation and continue to attract the highest level of disabled athletes as we look ahead to the Paralympic and Commonwealth Games.”

Nik Diaper, Head of Para Sport at Loughborough University, added:

“To be awarded the High-Performance Partnership is testament to the vision, hard work, and dedication we have to Para sport at Loughborough University. The new Lightning team will undoubtedly attract some of the country’s top female sporting talent and we’re looking forward to seeing what we can achieve.”

Dr Ian Pickup, Pro Vice Chancellor, Education & Experience at the University of East London said:

“We feel incredibly privileged to be entrusted with one of the first professional women’s wheelchair basketball franchises in the country. We are now looking forward to building something which East London can really get behind. Women’s sport, across the board, is growing all the time and I am proud of the role that UEL is playing in supporting female athletes.

“The East London Phoenix will be a team that represents the city. I’m sure they will inspire and encourage the next generation of female athletes – and not just wheelchair basketball players – so this really is a landmark moment for us, and sport in London.

“We’ve worked hard over the last decade to turn our sports offering into one of the best in the country, for both elite and recreational athletes, and to now have a franchise is another step on the journey.

“UEL is a university that is committed to providing its students pathways to explore different career options and we have a number of dual-career athletes. A host of players who will represent the Phoenix will be just that, giving them options to not only play elite sport but develop other skills and interests away from the game.”

Professor David Green CBE, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Worcester, added:

“The University of Worcester is thrilled to be able to continue to play an active role in the development of British Wheelchair Basketball. The University was home to the men’s and women’s teams in the lead up to the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games in Rio, and hosted the 2015 European Wheelchair Basketball championships, one of the most successful disability sporting events in recent times.

“The University’s work to promote inclusive sport is recognised across the globe and we are therefore delighted to be selected as part of this High-Performance Partnership initiative, which is ground breaking and exciting in so many ways and will certainly provide opportunities to improve elite performance and increase participation generally in the UK.”
