A tribute to Murray Treseder

British Wheelchair Basketball are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Murray Treseder. Murray Treseder was a seasoned high-performance coach with decades of experience at the top level of the sport, coaching the GB Men’s team 2007-2012.

Charlie Bethel, former CEO of British Wheelchair Basketball and current Executive Council member of the IWBF and Chair of the organisation’s Competition Commission, paid tribute:

“Above all Murray loved his family and his face lit up when he spoke of his daughters and grandchildren, his second love was a tie between Geelong Aussie Rules Football Team and Wheelchair Basketball.

A successful coach in the running game in Australia, Murray Treseder made the move to wheelchair basketball and was recognised as a leading talent and he took the [Australian] team to Silver at the Summer Paralympic Games in Athens.

Murray joined British Wheelchair Basketball in 2007 following the World Championships where he picked up a Bronze with Australia. He made an instant mark with his straight talking and desire to develop more young players into the national squad. In Beijing [2008], Murray took ill although the team still went on to take the Bronze with great performances from the players.

Murray had a strong desire to see the Women’s Team grow and he attended every training session he could to give them support; he would always be seen at Women’s League and Junior League games and travelled the UK to watch teams play in all divisions. With countless wins with the team Murray left British Wheelchair Basketball after London 2012.

In his semi-retirement, he went on to be a Performance Lead with Australia Basketball and supported the Rollers. He will be sorely missed by friends, teammates and his opponents on the court!”

The thoughts of everyone at British Wheelchair Basketball are with Murray’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.
