Team England Names 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball Coaches for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Terry Bywater and Lucas Warburton have today been announced as the Head Coaches for Team England’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball squads ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Seven-time Paralympian, Bywater, will lead the men’s side while Warburton returns to the helm of the women’s squad following his coaching role at Birmingham 2022, where both England teams secured bronze medals in the sport’s Commonwealth debut.

A silver medallist at Paris 2024, Bywater brings a wealth of elite playing experience into his coaching role. While stepping into this leadership position for Team England, he remains an active player at both international and club level.

“It’s a real honour to be appointed as a 3×3 coach for Team England,” said Bywater. “I’ve been fortunate to represent Great Britain for over two decades as a player, and I’m incredibly proud to now bring that experience into coaching. 3×3 is an exciting, fast-paced format that really showcases the skill and creativity of our athletes. I want to be a coach that inspires and helps players reach their full potential – and I’m looking forward to doing that.”

Warburton returns to the Commonwealth Games determined to build on the success of 2022. “I’m incredibly excited for my second opportunity to coach England at a Commonwealth Games,” Warburton said. “To be a part of such a prestigious programme like Team England is an honour and I’m looking forward to going out and showing again what wheelchair basketball has to offer on the Commonwealth Games stage.”

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow from 23 July to 2 August, featuring a reduced programme of 10 sports, including the return of 3×3 wheelchair basketball after its popular debut at Birmingham 2022.

The 3×3 format is a high-intensity, fast-paced version of the game played on a half-court with just three players per team. It demands quick decision-making and athleticism, making it one of the most dynamic and accessible forms of wheelchair basketball.

With the Games returning to the UK, the stage is set once again for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to compete for medals and inspire the next generation of players.
