GB Men’s coaches Bill Johnson and Joey Johnson to depart BWB
The GB Men’s coaching team Bill Johnson and Joey Johnson are set to depart British Wheelchair Basketball at the end of this year.
First appointed in April 2023 ahead of an unusually busy summer for the programme, Bill and Joey brought a high coaching pedigree to the roles. During their time with the Senior Men’s team, they achieved a Paralympic Games Silver (2024), a World Championships Silver (2023), and European Gold (2023) and Silver (2025).
The coaching duo extended their contracts for an additional year after a change in Performance Director, allowing the GB Men’s programme to remain stable through that transition period.
Justine Baynes, CEO of BWB, commented:
“We wish Bill and Joey the absolute best on their next chapter following their tenure with the GB Men’s team these last few years. The extension of their contract required considerable sacrifice on their part, and I would like to personally thank them for all the support they gave us with that extra year whilst we transitioned between Performance Directors.”
Kevin Currell, Performance Director of BWB commented:
“We want to thank Bill and Joey for all they have done for the players. To guide the team to four major finals in three years is no mean feat. The work they have done provides the foundation for the years to come. We want to be one programme which delivers two teams to peak when it matters most, and need to increase our coaching capacity going forward.”
Following this news, BWB will be recruiting within an updated structure for the GB Programme, with a large focus on increased coaching capacity which connects senior teams to our pathway.
