British Wheelchair Basketball to host the European Zonal Qualifier for Glasgow 2026

British Wheelchair Basketball are proud to announce we have secured the hosting duties for the IWBF Europe Zonal Qualifier for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Qualifier will be held at the University of Nottingham 4th April 2026, hosted in their prestigious venues fit for a world-class sporting event.

The event was awarded by IWBF, and the Europe Zone will grant a qualification spot to one men’s team and one women’s team. The countries within the IWBF Europe Zone eligible for the Commonwealth Games include Cyprus, England, Malta, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Glasgow 2026 marks the second time that wheelchair basketball will feature at a Commonwealth Games, having made a huge impact on its debut at Birmingham 2022.

Justine Baynes, CEO of British Wheelchair Basketball, commented:
“I am delighted that we have been chosen to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games Zonal Qualifiers. The event was a huge success in the Birmingham Games in 2022 and I am delighted that we will be able to showcase the sport again.”

Helen Redford-Sears, Sales & Events Manager at University of Nottingham Sport, added:
“The University of Nottingham is proud to be selected as the host venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games Zonal Qualifiers for 3×3 wheelchair basketball. This event marks an exciting milestone in our longstanding partnership with British Wheelchair Basketball. Hosting this dynamic and fast-paced version of the sport at our David Ross Sports Village will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase elite international competition and inspire our community as teams look to secure their place at the next Commonwealth Games.”

Charlie Bethel, IWBF Director of Sport and Competition and Technical Delegate for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, said:
“We are delighted to have confirmed hosts for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games 3×3 wheelchair basketball qualifiers. It’s fantastic to see such a diverse range of nations and our members engaging in the Commonwealth Sport 3×3 format. We hope this momentum continues, encouraging even more countries to get involved and helping to widen the reach and impact of the sport across the Commonwealth.”
