The Disability Confident Scheme is run by the Department of Work and Pensions and recognises companies who have the highest levels of Disability Inclusion in their workplace. As a Leader, British Wheelchair Basketball have achieved the highest level and provide an example of best practice for other employers.

British Wheelchair Basketball worked on their submission with ParalympicsGB, the National Paralympic Committee for Great Britain, to become the first sports NGB in the country to achieve Disability Confident Leadership – a major achievement for the organisation.

This achievement is part of BWB’s wider strategic aim to deliver against its Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, the organisation’s public commitment to ensuring wheelchair basketball is a sport for all.

The government’s Disability Confident scheme encourages employers take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people.

Justine Baynes, CEO of British Wheelchair Basketball, commented:
“I am absolutely delighted for us to be the first sporting NGB in the country to achieve Disability Confident Leadership Status. We recognise the role businesses can play in driving a change in societal narratives around disability, and this award is an important way for us to make progress on this.”
