British Wheelchair Basketball announces partnership with GB Masters
British Wheelchair Basketball (BWB) has confirmed a two-year partnership with GB Masters, providing greater competitive opportunities for wheelchair basketball players over the age of 40.
Building on the success of last year’s pilot event – where four teams competed in a full weekend of fixtures – the wheelchair basketball 2025 GB Masters tournament will be held from 6 – 8 June in Cardiff and will feature alongside the running game competition.
The GB Masters event has long been a staple of competitive sport for athletes aged 40 and over, and the introduction of wheelchair basketball further enhances its commitment to inclusivity and lifelong participation in sport.
BWB will support the continued growth of wheelchair basketball within the GB Masters programme. BWB will fund team entries for the competition and referee development will be a key focus over the weekend, supporting the wider growth of officiating within the sport.
Jo Rutavicius (BWB): “Last year’s pilot was a huge success and we’re delighted to formalise our partnership with GB Masters for the next two years. This event offers an important competitive opportunity for our over-40 athletes, keeping them in the sport and allowing them to continue playing at a high level. We’re looking forward to an exciting weekend of competition in Cardiff later this year.”
Nicky Shaw (GB Masters): “We are thrilled to partner with British Wheelchair Basketball to further develop competitive opportunities for Masters athletes. Having been involved in wheelchair basketball for over 30 years, I’ve seen first hand the passion and dedication of players at all levels. Integrating wheelchair basketball into the GB Masters tournament is a fantastic step forward, ensuring that athletes over-40 can continue competing at a high level while fostering inclusivity and lifelong participation in sport. We can’t wait to welcome teams to Cardiff in June for what promises to be an incredible weekend of basketball.”
