A tribute to Maurice Hammerton

Everyone at British Wheelchair Basketball is deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Maurice Hammerton this week.

Maurice dedicated much of his life to the sport of wheelchair basketball and contributed immensely to the sporting community as a player, as a coach, and through a variety of administrative roles.

A two-time Paralympian, Maurice wore the GB vest with great pride over 100 times during his international career. At home in the UK, he was a founding member of the Aces WBC who recently celebrated their 40th anniversary.

His devotion to Sheffield Steelers began in 1991 as a player, and later he became Chairman in 2015. During his tenure, he championed the club and nurtured talent that would go on to claim World Championships and Paralympic medals.

Steelers WBC commented: “Maurice was always there to help anyone who needed it, he will always be remembered. Once a Steeler always a Steeler.”

Working with British Wheelchair Basketball, Maurice was a member of the board from 1993 to 2008 where he was responsible for the instigation of a Coach Education Programme, and served as Assistant Coach for GB from 2001 to 2004. Maurice was also a Coach Tutor in the following years, helping many athletes reach their potential. In addition to his work domestically, Maurice was the Development Officer for IWBF Europe.

The thoughts of everyone at British Wheelchair Basketball are with Maurice’s family, friends, and the wider basketball community at this incredibly sad time.
