Maddie Thompson retires from international duty

GB Women’s athlete Maddie Thompson has retired from international duty, calling the curtain on a remarkable career spanning 16 years.

At just 13-years-old, Maddie became the youngest wheelchair basketball player to represent Great Britain when she competed in the 2008 European U22 Championships.

With characteristic agility and precision on court, Maddie quickly built herself a reputation on court and earned her place in the GB Senior squad within months of her junior debut. Throughout her career with the GB senior squad, Maddie picked up several medals, including silver at the 2018 World Championships, and a total of three bronze and one silver from European Championships. She also played a leading role as Vice-Captain at the 2019 U25 World Championships where the team claimed bronze.

Maddie made her Paralympic debut at London 2012, an immensely proud moment competing at an historic Games that would go on to inspire so many people to join the wheelchair basketball community. Maddie became a two-time Paralympian at Tokyo 2020 where she was a co-captain alongside her role of Assistant Coach.

Maddie continues to play domestically for Sheffield Steelers in the National League, the club that introduced her to the sport.
