Charlie McIntrye nominated for BBC Young Sports Person of the Year

We are thrilled to congratulate Charlie McIntyre on his nomination by BBC Sport for Young Sports Personality of the Year 2023.

Charlie has been named as one of the top three contenders alongside snowboarder Mia Brookes and archer Penny Healey, selected from an impressive list of young British athletes recognised for their outstanding achievements in the world of sport this year.

Over the past year, Charlie has shown his talent and dedication to wheelchair basketball with numerous accomplishments. Charlie represented GB U22 earlier this year in a friendly Home Nation’s competition, where the U22 squad won all three games. Across the three fixtures, Charlie averaged 20 points per game.

He was also part of the London Titans team that competed in the the BWB National League Premier Division final, and represented the club in the 2023 IWBF EuroCup where he was named part of the ‘All-Star 5’ on three occasions.

Speaking to the BBC on his nomination, Charlie commented:

“I am absolutely honoured to have even made it on the list for the Young Sports Personality of the Year, let alone to have made it in the top three contenders. It feels so amazing! I am lost for words, but I guess I would just like to thank every person who has followed or helped me along my path so far.”

Nominees were selected by a judging panel of athletes and representatives from BBC Sport, Youth Sport Trust, and Blue Peter.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023 awards will take place on Tuesday 19 December. The event will be streamed live on BBC One and iPlayer from 19:00 GMT.
