British Wheelchair Basketball announces appointment of Justine Baynes as new Chief Executive Officer

The National Governing Body for Wheelchair Basketball in the UK has announced the appointment of Justine Baynes as its new CEO. Baynes will assume her role at the helm of the organisation on Monday 5th December 2022.

With an extensive background in the Charity, Retail and Leisure/Sports industry, Baynes has held a number of senior leadership positions prior to joining British Wheelchair Basketball, with particular skills in Marketing and Communications and most recently as a Managing Director of a sporting retail business. Notably Baynes will bring to the sport a deep understanding of insightful leadership, effective communication strategies and a passion for stakeholder and partnership relationship development.

Current interim CEO, Jo Coates, will handover the NGB during December. Baynes will be in post in time to join the NGB for its annual AGM on Wednesday 7th December.

Commenting on the appointment British Wheelchair Basketball Chair, Jules Parke-Robinson, remarked:

“Justine has a wealth of experience across the charity, sport and retail sector and will bring a really fresh perspective to BWB.

“I know she is excited to get started and grateful that Jo will be on hand to support and provide a thorough handover. I know that as a sport we will welcome Justine and help her settle into the role quickly.”

Justine Baynes added:

“I am thrilled to be joining British Wheelchair Basketball at such an exciting time for the sport. The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are just around the corner, and I believe this will be a real opportunity to continue the good work that Lisa Pearce and Jo Coates have put into the sport.

“Wheelchair Basketball already has strong foundations from grassroots through to the world class programme and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in 2024 and beyond.

“I’ve really admired how the sport has increased its accessibility and thought of new ways to be open to new people which I am excited to support moving forwards.

“I am ready to get started and drive the sport towards its goals of investment, new audiences and digitalisation.”

A virtual webinar will be hosted 12th December at 7pm, where Interim CEO Jo Coates will be interviewing newly appointed CEO Justine Baynes.

The session will be hosted remotely via a Zoom call, with the link sent out prior to the event beginning.
