GB Round-up: 3rd – 5th February 2023

GB athletes got their EuroCup 2023 campaigns started this weekend, and the domestic leagues continue to ramp up. 

The EuroCup 2023 Champions Cup group stages took place this weekend, with GB players representing their clubs from the BWB National League, Spanish league, and German league.

Bidaideak Bilbao (James MacSorley) were event hosts for this round in the group stages. In their opening fixture they won 73:62 DECO Metalferro Amicacci Abruzzo. Bilbao won their second fixture 63:89 against Galatasaray SK. In their third fixture, Bilbao took the win 74:76 against Hornets Le Cannet. Rounding out a perfect weekend at their home venue, Bilbao won 84:71 in their final match against Manchester Revolution.

CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) had a comprehensive 41:89 victory to get their 2023 EuroCup campaign underway in their opening fixture against Interwetten-Coloplast Sitting Bulls. In their second fixture against ASD S. Stefano Sport, CD Ilunion won 77:62. In their third fixture against RSV Lahn-Dill, the Spanish side won 55:65. Rounding out their weekend, CD Ilunion won 79:53 against CS Meaux, going 4/4.

In the Primera Division, Servigest Burgos (Helen Freeman) won 40:70 against hosts Fundacion Vital Zuzenak. Freeman had 5 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds.

In Germany, RSV Lahn-Dill (Gaz Choudhry, Simon Brown) won 54:71 in their opening fixture against CS Meaux. In their second fixture against Interwetten-Coloplast Sitting Bulls, Lahn-Dill won 77:44. In their third game, Lahn-Dill were defeated 55:66 by CD Ilunion. Lahn-Dill took the win in their final match of the weekend against ASD S. Stefano Sport, winning 67:85.

Manchester Revolution (Martin Edwards, Niamh Horan, Sophie Carrigill) were defeated 67:63 in their opening fixture against DECO Metalferro Amicacci Abruzzo. In their second fixture against Hornets Le Cannet, Manchester Revolution were defeated 50:91. Galatasaray SK took the win 80:84 in a close third fixture. In their final game of the weekend, hosts Bidaideak Bilbao took the win 84:71.

Elsewhere in Spain in the BSR, Amiab Albacete (Harry Brown, Ben Fox, Lee Manning, Charlotte Moore, Phil Pratt) won 67:60 in the rearranged game against Amivel Reyes Gutierrez (Abdi Jama, Kyle Marsh, Lewis Edwards, Peter Cusack). For Amiab Albacete, Harry Brown had 3 points, 3 assists and 5 rebounds. Ben Fox had 13 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Lee Manning was joint game leader on points with 22 points, team leader on rebounds with 19 rebounds and had 3 assists and 19 rebounds. For Amivel Reyes Gutierrez, Kyle Marsh was team leader on assists with 7 assists, and had 14 points and 2 rebounds.

At home in the BWB National League Premier Division, London Titans (Jack Perry, Jude Hamer) had a comprehensive 28:78 victory against hosts CWBA (Kayla Bell). Jack Perry had 46 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists. For CWBA, Kayla Bell had 2 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist.

Sheffield Steelers (Tyler Baines, Maddie Thompson) won 79:51 against visitors Wakefield Whirlwinds. Tyler Baines had 35 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists. Maddie Thompson had 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

In the BWB Women’s Premier League, East London Phoenix (Sophie Carrigill, Amy Conroy, Jude Hamer) were defeated 53:81 by visitors Loughborough Lightning (Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Robyn Love, Lucy Robinson). For East London Phoenix, Amy Conroy had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Jude Hamer had 6 points and 4 assists. For Loughborough Lightning, Siobhan Fitzpatrick had 4 points. Robyn Love had 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Lucy Robinson had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

In the US, University of Alabama (Joy Haizelden) won 69:66 at home against visitors ABC Medical in the UA Early College Classic. Joy Haizelden had 6 points and 2 assists.

British Wheelchair Basketball players head to the EuroCup!

Four BWB National League Premier Division teams and a score of GB players representing their clubs in the Spanish and German leagues are competing in the eagerly anticipated EuroCup Champions Cup group stages this weekend.

The competition features 55 teams from 14 different countries, and will visit 16 locations across four weekends as the stages progress.

The EuroCup gets underway 2nd – 5th February with the group stages of the Champions Cup. Following this, EuroCup group stages 1 – 3 and the quarter finals of the Champions Cup takes place 9th – 12th March. The EuroCup finals take place 27th-30th April in Italy, Spain and Turkey. The Final 4 of Champions Cup will take place in the Netherlands 4th-7th May.

Representing the BWB National League Premier Division, four teams are heading out to take part in the EuroCup competition: London Titans, Warwickshire Bears, Manchester Revolution and Plymouth Fusion.

Alongside the four Premier Division teams, several GB players are set to represent their clubs in the Spanish and German leagues.

The BWB Women’s Premier League is back, and BSR Amiab Albacete remain undefeated in the Spanish league with a 13/13 record.

In Spain, Amivel Reyes Gutierrez (Abdi Jama, Kyle Marsh, Lewis Edwards, Peter Cusack) won 35:79 on the road against Menarini Joventut. Kyle Marsh had 17 points, 10 assists and 4 rebounds.  

CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) won 84:76 against visitors Mideba Extremadura. Gregg Warburton had 10 points, 5 assists and 1 rebound. Terry Bywater was team leader on assists with 10 assists, and had 16 points and 4 rebounds.

Bidaideak Bilbao (James MacSorley) had a comprehensive 96:49 victory against Abeconsa Basketmi Ferrol. James MacSorley had 13 points, 1 assist and 1 rebound.

Amiab Albacete (Harry Brown, Ben Fox, Lee Manning, Charlotte Moore, Phil Pratt) won 68:53 against UCAM Murcia (Lee Fryer). For Amiab Albacete, Harry Brown had 7 points and 2 assists. Ben Fox had 5 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds. Lee Manning was game leader on points with 21 points, and had 8 rebounds. Phil Pratt had 14 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. For UCAM Murcia, Lee Fryer had 14 points, 1 assist and 2 rebounds.

At home in the BWB National League Premier Division, Manchester Revolution (Martin Edwards, Niamh Horan, Sophie Carrigill) won 89:33 at home against visitors Glasgow Rocks. Martin Edwards had 20 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Sophie Carrigill had 1 rebound.

Sheffield Steelers (Tyler Baines, Maddie Thompson) won 76:43 against visitors Glasgow Rollin’ Rocks. Elsewhere, London Titans (Jack Perry, Jude Hamer) won 23:97 on the road against Wakefield Whirlwind.

The BWB Women’s Premier League returned this weekend, with GB athletes competing for each of the four teams. In the opening match of the 2023 season, East London Phoenix (Sophie Carrigill, Amy Conroy, Jude Hamer) won 71:31 against Cardiff Met Archers (Jade Atkin).

Loughborough Lightning (Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Robyn Love, Lucy Robinson) won 67:33 against visitors Worcester Wolves in their season opener. Siobhan Fitzpatrick had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Robyn Love was game leader across the board with 21 points, 19 rebounds and 11 assists. Lucy Robinson had 18 points, 10 rebounds and 1 assist. For Worcester Wolves, Kayla Bell had 1 assist. Niamh Horan had 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

A busy weekend for the GB athletes as teams defend their league positions and players dominate the stats.

In Germany, league leaders RSV Lahn-Dill (Gaz Choudhry, Simon Brown) won 72:61 against visitors Hannover United. Gaz Choudhry had 2 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Simon Brown had 2 rebounds. Elsewhere, Rhine River Rhinos (Jim Palmer) won 77:46 against ING Skywheelers. Jim Palmer had 2 rebounds and 1 assist.

CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) won 74:80 on the road against Fundacion Aliados. Gregg Warburton was game leader on assists with 13 assists, and had 13 points and 2 rebounds. Terry Bywater had 17 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds.

A score of GB athletes were on court in Malaga as Bidaideak Bilbao (James MacSorley) won 65:75 against home team Amivel Reyes Gutierrez (Abdi Jama, Kyle Marsh, Lewis Edwards, Peter Cusack). Over in the US, University of Alabama (Joy Haizelden) won all three matches in the Hollister Winter Bash. First up, they won 73:31 against University of Illinois. Their second match was a 82:14 victory over University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Their final match of the tournament was a 79:43 victory over UT Arlington.

The Women’s Premier League gets underway at home, with several GB Women’s athletes taking to the courts for the four teams.

In Spain, the BSR returned following the festive break. Amiab Albacete (Harry Brown, Ben Fox, Lee Manning, Charlotte Moore, Phil Pratt) maintain their 11/0 winning streak, defeating visitors Bidaideak Bilbao (James MacSorley) 73:59. For Amiab Albacete, Harry Brown had 3 points. Ben Fox had 1 point, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. Lee Manning had 22 points, 1 assist and 10 rebounds. Phil Pratt was team leader on assists with 12 assists, and had 14 points and 9 rebounds. For Bidaideak Bilbao, James MacSorley had 2 points.

A top of the table clash at home in the BWB National League Premier Division as GB athletes complete their last fixtures of the year before the festive break.

At home in the BWB National League, Sheffield Steelers (Tyler Baines, Maddie Thompson) won 64:72 on the road against Manchester Revolution (Martin Edwards, Niamh Horan, Sophie Carrigill), ending Manchester Mavericks unbeaten run of seven games. For Sheffield Steelers, Tyler Baines had 25 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Maddie Thompson had 8 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists. For Manchester Mavericks, Martin Edwards had 25 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists. Sophie Carrigill had 1 rebound and 1 assist.

Elsewhere, London Titans (Jack Perry, Jude Hamer) had a comprehensive 81:36 win against visitors Mohawks. Jack Perry had 25 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. Jude Hamer had 4 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist.

In Germany, Rhine River Rhinos (James Palmer) had a 71:43 home victory against BG Baskets Hamburg. James Palmer had 4 points, 1 rebound and 2 assists.

In Spain, UCAM Murcia (Lee Fryer) were defeated 49:73 at home by CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater). For UCAM Murcia, Lee Fryer was team leader on assists with 7 assists and had 10 points and 6 rebounds. In Spain, all clubs featuring GB athletes recorded a win across the weekend across the BSR. CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) had a comprehensive 100:31 win against visitors Abeconsa Basketmi Ferrol. Gregg Warburton was game leader on assists with 8 assists, tied on game leader on points with 22 points, and had 4 rebounds. Terry Bywater had 11 points, 2 assists and 4 rebounds.

Amivel Reyes Gutierrez (Abdi Jama, Kyle Marsh, Lewis Edwards, Peter Cusack) had a 60:52 victory at home against Fundacion Aliados. Abdi Jama had 2 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds.
