Justine Lucas – England Talent Manager

June 2021 – Present

Justine is responsible for the organisation and execution of the England talent pathway. This includes: Regional Academies, DiSE, TASS and SportsAid. The role of England Talent Manager is varied and covers a range of operational roles within a performance and participation setting. Justine is responsible for project managing the Commonwealth Games England 3×3 squads, working with athletes, sports practitioners and coaches ahead of what will be an historic Games for the sport.

Favourite aspect of your job:

Working with the young, up and coming players – watching them develop in to great people and great players!

Career Highlight:

Definitely School Games so far, although looking forward to being the Team Leader for the England 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball Teams at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 2022

Career background:

  • Worked for the National Careers Service and Advance Employment helping people with disabilities find work and learning
  • Worked at the Guild of Students (University of Birmingham) for the Student Mentor Scheme, supporting students living in accommodation (with transition, housing, finance, mental health and wellbeing) and managed a peer–to–peer support service
  • Professional Rugby Player – England Rugby
  • Performance Lifestyle Advisor at British Para-Swimming and the English Institute of Sport

Advice for anyone thinking about a career in your role:

Volunteer – get as many experiences across lots of different sports in different roles to ensure you understand the bigger picture

Use pre-existing contacts to gain experience, knowledge and contacts – network! Put yourself out there and make a good impression

Always be willing to learn – read books and listen to podcasts, as well as enrolling on courses, to ensure continued learning
