In Spain, Amiab Albacete (Harry Brown, Ben Fox, Lee Manning, Charlotte Moore, Phil Pratt) extend their winning streak to 7/0 with a comprehensive 109:40 win at home against visitors Abeconsa Basketmi Ferrol. Lee Manning was game leader on points and rebounds with 32 points and 13 rebounds, and had 7 assists. Harry Brown had 4 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds. Ben Fox had 18 points, 5 assists and 6 rebounds. Charlotte Moore had 2 points. Phil Pratt had 2 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds.

UCAM Murcia (Lee Fryer) were defeated 73:63 on the road against Econy Grand Canaria. Lee Fryer was team leader for UCAM Murcia on points and assists with 27 points and 5 assists, and had 5 rebounds.

CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) won 69:62 at home against Fundacion Aliados, maintaining their current position of second in the league. Terry Bywater was game leader on points and assists with 27 points and 7 assists, and had 4 rebounds. Gregg Warburton had 4 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds.

GB athletes were back in action for their clubs in the Spanish and German leagues this week, and the University of Alabama headed to Tuscaloosa for the Truist Shoot Out.

In Spain, CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) won 50:79 against hosts Iberconsa Amfiv. GB teammates Terry Bywater and Gregg Warburton were joint team leaders on assists with 8 assists each. Bywater had 13 points. Warburton had 12 points and 1 rebound.

Amivel Reyes Gutierrez (Abdi Jama, Kyle Marsh, Lewis Edwards, Peter Cusack) were defeated 68:58 on the road against Mideba Extremadura. Abdi Jama had 9 points and 1 rebound. Kyle Marsh had 8 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Lewis Edwards had 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

In Germany, RSV Lahn-Dill (Gaz Choudhry, Simon Brown) had two fixtures at the weekend. In their first fixture, Lahn-Dill were defeated 64:68 by hosts BBC Münsterland. In their Sunday fixture, Lahn-Dill took the win 52:76 on the road against BG Baskets Hamburg.

Across the Atlantic, the University of Alabama (Joy Haizelden) took part in the Truist Shoot Out in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In their first game, the University of Alabama won 74:34 against Memphis Grizzlies. In their second match, they lost 67:59 against Legends.

In Madrid, GB Men’s team took part in the BSR Copa de Naciones invitational, which featured Spain, Netherlands, France and Poland. In their opening fixture of the invitational, GB had a 60:67 victory over the Netherlands. Kyle Marsh was team leader on points with 15 points and game leader on assists with 12 assists. A top of the table clash in Spain featured seven GB athletes on court competing for their clubs as Amiab Albacete (Harry Brown, Ben Fox, Lee Manning, Charlotte Moore, Phil Pratt) took the win 64:80 against home team CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater)

For Amiab Albacete, Ben Fox had 4 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Lee Manning was game leader on rebounds with 16 rebounds, and 20 points and 4 assists. Phil Pratt had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Harry Brown had 2 points and 1 rebound. For CD Ilunion, Gregg Warburton had 13 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Terry Bywater was team leader on points and assists with 20 points and 6 assists, and had 8 rebounds.

In Germany, RSV Lahn-Dill (Gaz Choudhry, Simon Brown) won 49:71 on the road against Rhine River Rhinos (Jim Palmer). For RSV Lahn-Dill, Gaz Choudhry had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Simon Brown had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist. For Rhine River Rhinos, Jim Palmer had 2 points.

Across the Atlantic, University of Alabama (Joy Haizelden) went 4/4 at the Arlington Tournament in Texas. On the Saturday, Alabama won 57-32 against the University of Arizona and 61-37 against UT Arlington. On Sunday, Alabama won 58-25 against Arizona and 64-33 against UT Arlington.

GB athletes abroad continue to build momentum on their teams’ winning streaks, and there were several dominant performances across the leagues.

At the University of Alabama, Crimson Tide (Joy Haizelden) marked the beginning of their 2022-23 season with the Tide Tipoff, an in-house competition showcasing the new and returning players representing the team for the season ahead.

At home in the BWB National League, London Titans (Jack Perry, Jude Hamer) had a comprehensive victory over visitors Sheffield Steelers (Tyler Baines, Maddie Thompson). For London Titans, Jude Hamer had 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Jack Perry was game leader on points and rebounds with 34 points and 15 rebounds, and had 1 assist. For Sheffield Steelers, Tyler Baines was team leader on points with 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Manchester Revolution (Martin Edwards, Niamh Horan, Sophie Carrigill) had a 86:42 victory at home against Wakefield Whirlwinds. Martin Edwards was game leader on points with 31 points, and had 13 rebounds and 8 assists. Sophie Carrigill had 2 rebounds and 1 assist.

In Spain, CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) and Amiab Albacete (Harry Brown, Ben Fox, Lee Manning, Charlotte Moore, Phil Pratt) continue their winning streak having both won all four of the games played so far. They’ll match up on the 29th of October for a highly anticipated head-to-head as both teams look determined to claim the lead.  

CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) won 50:76 against hosts Econy Gran Canaria.

Amiab Albacete (Harry Brown, Ben Fox, Lee Manning, Charlotte Moore, Phil Pratt) had a dominant  99:32 victory over Joventut BCR, one point shy of a triple digit score. Lee Manning was game leader on rebounds with 11 rebounds, and had 23 points and 3 assists. Harry Brown had 4 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Ben Fox had 8 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Phil Pratt had 10 points, 1 rebound and 6 assists.

Amivel Reyes Gutierrez (Abdi Jama, Kyle Marsh, Lewis Edwards, Peter Cusack) suffered a 50:42 defeat on the road against Fundacion FDI-V.Leganes. Abdi Jama had 8 points. Kyle Marsh had 3 points and 2 rebounds. Lewis Edwards had 5 points and 4 rebounds. Peter Cusack had 4 points and 5 rebounds.

Bidaideak Bilbao (James MacSorley) had a 88:71 home game victory against Mideba Extremadura. James MacSorley had 2 points and 2 assists. An important win for Bidaideak Bilbabo as they are currently joint third place with three other teams.

One of the three other teams sharing that third-place league position is UCAM Murcia (Lee Fryer) who defeated Iberconsa Amfiv 78:59 at home. Lee Fryer was team leader on points with 19 points, and had 4 rebounds and 5 assists.

In Germany, RSV Lahn-Dill (Gaz Choudhry, Simon Brown) won 69:45 against visitors RBC Köln 99ers. Gaz Choudhry had 18 points. RSV Lahn-Dill continue their own winning streak of 5/0, equalling rivals RSB Thuringia Bulls on league points.

Elsewhere, Rhine River Rhinos (Jim Palmer) traveled to Hannover United and won 72:65.

In Germany, Rhine River Rhinos (Jim Palmer) had a 77:68 home game victory over visitors Doneck Dolphins Trier. Jim Palmer had 10 points. An important victory for Rhine River Rhinos as they sit fourth in the league overall.

Earlier in the week, RSV Lahn-Dill (Gaz Choudhry, Simon Brown) had a comfortable 90:38 victory against Hot Rolling Bears – Simon Brown had 9 points. RSV Lahn-Dill currently sit second in the league on points, having won all four of their matches so far this season.

In Spain, the exciting Madrid derby saw victory for CD Ilunion (Gregg Warburton, Terry Bywater) as they won 82:50 against FDI Foundation-Villa de Leganés. Terry Bywater was game leader on assists with 13 assists, and had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Gregg Warburton had 21 points, going 4/4 on 3pt attempts, and had 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

A close game in Malaga as UCAM Murcia (Lee Fryer) defeated Amivel Reyes Gutierrez (Abdi Jama, Kyle Marsh, Lewis Edwards, Peter Cusack) 57:61, with the away team clinching victory in the final moments of the game. For UCAM Murcia, Lee Fryer was game leader on assists with 9 assists, and had 11 points and 4 rebounds. For Amivel Reyes Gutierrez, Abdi Jama had 6 points and 1 rebound. Kyle Marsh was team leader on assists with 6 assists, and had 13 points and 1 rebound. Lewis Edwards had 6 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Peter Cusack had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

Miguel Vaquero Maestre appointed Head Coach of GB Women

Miguel Vaquero Maestre has been appointed Head Coach of GB Women’s Team, a crucial appointment for British Wheelchair Basketball as part of our ambitious Paris strategy.  

This appointment is a critical move for the NGB following the inaugural season of the ground-breaking Women’s Premier League, with a clear goal of developing talent across the elite performance pathway and achieving success at an international level.  

Miguel brings to the sport an extensive background in coaching, including leading the hugely successful Spanish team CD Ilunion to multiple titles and coaching the Spanish U22 national team, Miguel is well placed to bring his significant expertise and experience to the role.  

On his appointment Miguel commented:  

“I am delighted to join the team at British Wheelchair Basketball. I have been getting to know the team, this relationship for me this is one of the most important things. It’s very important that we keep building upon the team principles, and that we keep working well to understand individual roles. This will enable us to achieve the outcomes we collectively want as a team.”   

Performance Director Diccon Edwards commented on Miguel’s appointment:  

“I am really excited to have a coach of the quality and experience of Miguel coming to join us. He has been successful in winning all the major competitions in Europe as a club coach and this experience will be invaluable in developing the GB Women’s team.  

“What also stood out through the recruitment process was his approach to developing people and creating positive enjoyable environments enabling players to be at their best. I am looking forward to working with him and I know the players are equally excited about working with him.”
