In a weekend of mixed fortunes for GB players, nearly a quarter of all the points scored on the opening weekend of the Spanish League were scored by British players with Lee Manning ending the weekend as the top-scoring GB player.
Manning’s 15 points helped BSR Amiab Albacete to victory as four British players reached double points figures for the Spanish team.
Kyle Marsh (14 points), Gaz Choudhry (12 points) and Harry Brown (10 points) were the other GB players in action for Albacete as they won 77-57 against CB Las Rozas.
Six weeks after being part of the European Championships winning GB men’s team, Abdi Jama, Phil Pratt, Gregg Warburton, George Bates and Ben Fox were all back on court together, beginning their 2019/20 season for Mideba Extremadura.
Despite scoring 61 of Mideba’s 63 points, the scoring efforts of the British quintet weren’t enough to stop their Badajoz-based team falling to an opening weekend defeat against Bidaideak Bilbao (63-71).
Bates top-scored with 14 points, Warburton’s 13 points included a three-pointer, Jama totalled 12 points, while Pratt and Fox both scored 11 points.
Terry Bywater scored two three-pointers en-route to his total of 14 points to help CD Ilunion to an 71-38 opening weekend victory over Fundacion Vital Zuzenak.
In the battle of the Brits, Lewis Edwards and Sam Mack’s Iberconsa Amfiv triumphed over James MacSorley’s Gran Canaria. Edwards scored seven points; one more than McSorley’s total.
Thomas Smith scored eight points as his Rincon Dental Amivel side lost 52-77 to Fundacion Grupo Norte.
In Germany, Simon Brown scored nine points to help RSV Lahn-Dill continue their unbeaten start to the season with an 83-49 victory over RBB Munchen Iguanas.
Jim Palmer’s Rhine River Rhino’s Wiesbaden lost 42-88 to RSB Thuringia Bulls, with Palmer totalling one assist.
