GB Women depart Lyon with a clean sweep of victory
British Wheelchair Basketball communications volunteer Dylan Cummings reviews the GB Women’s successful Lyon Wheelchair Basketball Competition campaign.
In a vital preparation tournament ahead of the forthcoming World Championships to GB Women’s squad headed to France to compete in the Lyon Wheelchair Basketball Competition.
In Lyon they were matched up against solid opposition in the forms of Canada, France and Spain as all four teams displayed why they are World Championship calibre.
The tournament also proved to be a valuable experience for GB as they had the opportunity to battle two teams (Canada and Spain) that are in the same pool as them in the World Championships.
The team fought the hosts, France in their first game of the tournament, which resulted in an emphatic 60-18 win for the ladies.
They continued to see off Spain 61-37 before finishing the pool stages with an 100%-win record with a 53-40 victory over 2014 World Champions, Canada.
The semi-final saw a rematch between GB and Spain. The women kept their winning streak going as they triumphed over the Spanish side 57-36.
This meant the final pitched GB against Canada. Both teams gave it their all, however, GB were able to forge ahead and claim the 61-49 victory, finishing the tournament unbeaten.
The GB Women will next feature in wheelchair basketball action competing in the Continental Clash against Canada, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands. The event will take place at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield from July 2nd-6th.
