British Wheelchair Basketball’s 2018 National Championships to be broadcast live.
The sport’s Premier Division Final, Lord’s Taverners Junior League Final and Women’s League Final during the Bank Holiday weekend on the 26 and 27 May will be streamed by the BBC. The action will be live on BBC Sport Online directly from British Wheelchair Basketball’s new home and the GB team’s Elite Training Centre at English Institute of Sport Sheffield.
The agreement marks the first time that British Wheelchair Basketball’s domestic game has been live streamed on BBC Sport Online.
British Wheelchair Basketball’s National Leagues (including Junior and Women’s) are proven talent pathways for many of the sport’s Paralympic stars. The National Championships will see the top four teams from each division of the British Wheelchair Basketball’s National Leagues play-off for a place in the final game.
The Premier Division, Lord’s Taverners Junior League and Women’s League finals will feature GB Paralympians and squad members past and present, offering spectators a glimpse of these elite athletes competing with their home clubs.
British Wheelchair Basketball will be working with established streaming partner Televideo, and veteran BBL and Basketball commentator Dan Routledge who will be supported by GB Pundits Joseph Jayaratne (National League Finals), Siobhan Fitzpatrick (Junior League Final) and Miles Thompson (Women’s League Final).
Lisa Pearce, CEO of British Wheelchair Basketball commented:
“This live streaming agreement will prove both a critical and historic moment for British Wheelchair Basketball. Our sport has proved to be hugely popular with Paralympic audiences at both London 2012 and Rio 2016.
“It is an incredibly exciting time for our sport as we fulfil our ambition to grow its reach and impact.
“BBC’s commitment to deliver more live sport to audiences will highlight the quality of the wheelchair basketball being played on UK courts every week, and the opportunities that are available for aspiring athletes to become involved in this dramatic sport.
“We look forward to working with the BBC.”
